Lesedi Cultural Village - Place of light
Lesedi is a Sotho word which means 'place of light'. It was made famous by the great leader and founder of the Southern Sotho nation, Moshoeshoe (pronounced Mosh-we-shwe). During the terrible Mfecane wars, refugees from many nations joined him and were saved by him. Each morning Moshoeshoe would awaken and walk out into the new day with this expression on his lips........ Ke bona lesedi . . . I see the light. Lesedi is a multi-cultural village set amongst the pristine bushveld and rocky hills less than an hour's drive north of Johannesburg in the Magaliesberg. Situated at Lesedi are four traditional homesteads - the Xhosa with their perfectly thatched rondawels and white blankets, the Zulus with their fighting sticks and cosy beehive huts, the rhythmic drums and whistles of the Pedi and the conical straw hats and thick, colourful blankets of the Basotho. Each traditional homestead at Lesedi is inhabited by a family of elders, wives and children all peacefully living their traditional lives. Four additional huts have been built in each homestead for guests to offer them the unique opportunity of staying with a traditional rural family - however, all home comforts have been catered for, including cosy beds and beautiful bathrooms with showers, hot and cold running water and flushing toilets. On arrival at Lesedi in the late afternoon, guests are welcomed by the families who then take them to their homestead and show them where they will be staying. Once settled in their comfortable huts they will then get to know the many colourful and fascinating aspects of the culture of the people of Lesedi. As the sun sets over the African bush, guests are escorted to the cultural boma for an experience of a lifetime. There, the different tribes of Lesedi perform traditional dances and tell stories that date back to the days of their ancestors. A traditional- style African feast is served during the course of the evening. Guests gather around the open fire and talk late into the night, and are then escorted back to their huts by members of their host family. For those who do not have enough time to stay over at Lesedi Cultural Village, we also offer the Monati Lunch Experience or guests can join our Boma Evening Experience - all unique experiences in themselves where guests can share the excitement of rural African culture.
